The annual women and non-binary tournament, Equal Esports Cup (EEC), kicked off yesterday with the first round of the Group Stage.
G2 Hel saw a strong start to their campaign, while British players stumbled at the first hurdle.
The tournament comes after the announcement of League of Legends Game Changers, where the top teams will be considered for the new league.
G2 Hel defeat Las Divinas
G2 Esports’ female League of Legends (LoL) team, G2 Hel, have been a strong presence in the women’s LoL esports scene.
They once again proved to be a force to be reckoned with as they defeated Las Divinas in a clean 2-0 series.
Las Divinas were able to catch G2 Hel off guard in the first game, picking them off at every opportunity.
However, G2 Hel’s experience overwhelmed the rookie squad to control the map and take the first game.
Heading into the second game, G2 Hel found their footing to take the game and series.
Despite managing to steal away a few objectives, Las Divinas were bested by G2 Hel’s massive gold advantage.
British stars struggle at Equal Esports Cup
Elsewhere in the tournament, British players struggled to find ground on the first day of the EEC.
WLG Female Stars were the first to fall after losing to Femmes Fatales.
The team features former Lionscreed Lionesses players, Laura ‘GertrudeThePony’ Riches and Charlotte ‘Charlotte’ Yeung.
Rounded out by former Venomcrest Serpants AD Carry, Malik ‘Mirai’ Osivwemu.
Meanwhile, the Supernova Comets AD Carry, Isabella ‘Izzeeri’, was defeated by Galions Pearl.
Top laner Evie ‘Pivotless’ Pullen for Solary Academy was the only one who saw success, as they defeated Last Minute Airlines.
Unfortunately, this meant defeating fellow Brit, Scarlett ‘Naddy’ Bettison, in the process.
Road to League of Legends Game Changers
Elsewhere in the EEC, Team Vitality’s Rising Bees had a disappointing result after drawing with Zerance Bloom.
Meanwhile, SK Gaming Avarosa were defeated by Nexus Reapers.
The latter features former G2 Hel and Vitality Rising Bees members of Agnė ‘Karina’ Ivaškevičiūtė and Alena ‘TIFA’ Maurer.
Karina also competed at the recent UKEL 4 Nations Spring Finals, where they lost to Venomcrest Serpents.
Teams at the EEC will be competing to claim more than the top prize this year.
This year, the finalists of EEC will be considered for the upcoming LGC.
The LGC being the first women’s only tournament hosted by Riot Games.
Meanwhile, G2 Hel, Vitality Rising Bees, and SK Gaming Avarosa have guaranteed slots in LGC.
